Tiler Peck, the celebrated principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, stepped into the spotlight with a passionate defense of ballet and opera. Her response came after Timothée Chalamet sparked debate by dismissing these timeless art forms as relics few people care about anymore. Peck’s words struck a chord, reminding everyone of the raw emotion and dedication that keep these worlds alive even as Hollywood stars chase the next big screen moment. At 37, Peck has spent her career soaring across stages, and her rebuttal felt personal, like a dancer catching her breath after a demanding pas de deux.

Tiler Peck’s emotional stand

Tiler Peck shared a heartfelt Instagram video montage of her performances and cheering crowds, overlaying it with a caption that cut straight to the heart. “I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea that ‘no one cares about ballet or opera anymore.’ For those of us who live inside these art forms, that couldn’t feel further from the truth,” she wrote. “Every day I walk into a studio where dancers are pushing their bodies past exhaustion in pursuit of something beautiful. I rehearse alongside musicians, singers, stage crews, costume designers, and choreographers who dedicate their lives to telling stories.” She went on to highlight the enduring power of these crafts. “These art forms have existed for hundreds of years because generation after generation continues to find meaning in them. They evolve, they change, and they continue to move people in ways that are hard to put into words,” Peck continued. “If you’ve ever sat in a theater and felt your heart race as the music swells or watched a dancer fly across the stage and felt something shift inside you, then you know people still care. I’m grateful every day to be part of this art form.”

Timothee Chalamet’s original remarks

The firestorm started in February when Timothée Chalamet, 30, joined Matthew McConaughey for a Variety and CNN town hall at the University of Texas at Austin. Chalamet said, “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or you know, things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive,’ even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore.” He added playfully, “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.”

Wider backlash builds

Tiler Peck was not alone in pushing back. Ballet icon Misty Copeland spoke at Aveeno and TOGETHXR’s “The Strength Issue” launch on March 8, stating, “There’s a reason that the opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years.” Grammy-winning opera singer Isabelle Leonard called Chalamet “shocked that someone so seemingly successful can be so ineloquent and narrow-minded in his views about art.” Pop star Doja Cat criticized the remarks in a now-deleted TikTok, as reported by the People Magazine, while The View hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines weighed in too. Goldberg warned, “When you c*** on somebody else’s art form, it doesn’t feel good. Be careful, boy.” Haines noted Chalamet’s family ties to the New York City Ballet through his grandmother, mother, and sister. Go to Source
