A 17-year-old, identified as a Libyan national, has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 32-year-old Ukrainian woman near the Eiffel Tower. The incident, which reportedly occurred near the Champ-de-Mars, saw the woman forcibly dragged into bushes before being sexually assaulted.

Police on a nearby patrol were alerted by the victim’s screams and swiftly apprehended the suspect. The accused, who was reportedly intoxicated, claimed to be 17 and of Libyan nationality, though his identity is still being verified by authorities as he possessed no identity papers.

This latest incident follows other high-profile cases of sexual assault in the area. In 2023, a 27-year-old Mexican tourist reported being raped by five men in the Champ de Mars park. Later that same year, a 23-year-old British police officer reported being raped at knifepoint at the foot of the tower.

Rachida Dati, the borough’s mayor, earlier highlighted the persistent issue, stating that “sexual assaults,” and “not to mention rapes,” occur “every day” on the Champ-de-Mars, attributing some of the problem to “under-equipment.”

According to the Paris police headquarters, there has been one reported rape in the Champ-de-Mars area in 2024 and seven sexual assaults. This compares to five rapes and nine sexual assaults recorded in the same area during 2023.
