Energy Alert: LPG Supply Secured Amid Middle East Conflict; Mumbai & Chandigarh Face Local Shortages

Amid the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, India’s LPG supply system has been placed on high alert to ensure domestic availability remains uninterrupted. The Petroleum Ministry issued a detailed notification confirming that households will not face shortages, easing public concerns over PNG, CNG, and LPG access despite global market volatility. The government has outlined a roadmap for uninterrupted supply, specifying sectors that will receive priority and those where minor rationing may occur. However, local challenges persist. In Mumbai, hotel owners report that about 20% of establishments are temporarily closing due to insufficient LPG supply. Many hotels have only a few hours’ worth of fuel left, forcing them to limit operations and suspend certain menu items. The scarcity stems from disrupted imports and temporary halts at commercial LPG plants, causing both domestic and commercial users to experience delays. In Chandigarh, long queues have formed outside gas agencies as residents struggle to book cylinders, with online booking systems failing due to high demand. Hotels and restaurants in affected cities are reporting operational strain, with private distributors prioritizing domestic households while commercial supply faces constraints. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation, aiming to curb panic buying and prevent black market activity. Officials emphasize that these local disruptions do not indicate a nationwide shortage and assure that steps are being taken to maintain a stable supply chain, keeping households and critical services prioritized.
