Veteran actor Tamal Roy Choudhury, known for the film ‘The Namesake’, has passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026. He was 80. As per the reports, the actor suffered a cardiac arrest while he was sleeping at his home in Kolkata. Tamal Roy Choudhury was known as a character actor in the Bengali film industry. He featured in popular Bengali movies like ‘Challenge’, ‘Le Halua Le’, ‘Bindass’, ‘Amazon Obhijaan’, and ‘Chander Pahar’. He also starred in arthouse films such as ‘Jatiswar’ and ‘Gorosthane Sabdhan’. In ‘The Namesake’, directed by Mira Nair, Tamal Roy Choudhury played the role of Irrfan Khan’s father. The actor passed away on March 9, which coincidentally marks 19 years of the film’s release in the United States. The movie had premiered in the US on March 9, 2007. It featured Kal Penn, Tabu, Irrfan Khan, Zuleikha Robinson, Jacinda Barrett, Sebastian Roché, Sahira Nair, Ruma Guha Thakurta, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, and Supriya Devi.In his later years, the actor became a well-respected mentor and source of inspiration for young performers in theater and film, despite cutting back on his work owing to health issues.
