A Chinese food courier’s chance encounter with an American nursery teacher in an elevator has turned into a viral love story- one that led to marriage just five months later. Liu, a 27-year-old delivery rider from Liaoning province, first met Hannah Harris, a 30-year-old from Alabama, when he delivered noodles to her apartment in Shenyang. As the two crossed paths in the lift, Liu nervously blurted out in broken English, “Hello, I love you.”

Hannah Harris laughed but the moment marked the start of a whirlwind romance. The pair soon exchanged contact details and began chatting. Hannah Harris suggested they help each other with languages- Liu teaching her Chinese, while she supported his English. They bonded over shared interests, from animals and cooking to rollerblading and travel.

Hannah Harris even accompanied Liu on delivery runs and the couple spent weekends exploring nearby villages.

“Although we’ve known each other for a short time, I feel she’s the one,” Liu said.

In January this year, Liu proposed with a diamond ring at an underground station. Two months later, they married in Liu’s hometown, with Hannah Harris’ parents sending video blessings from the US. Despite Liu’s modest background, Hannah Harris said she did not care about wealth as she said, “We are soul mates. Love can’t be measured by material things.”

The couple now rely on translation apps while learning each other’s languages and share a pet teddy dog named Pudding, cook dishes from each other’s cultures and enjoy cycling together, they shared.

Their story has since gone viral on Chinese social media, amassing more than three million views.
