‘Squid Game’ reality franchise expands after breakout success

‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ debuted in November 2023 after the massive global impact of ‘Squid Game,’ a drama about people pushed into a deadly contest for prize money. The reality version kept the tension but removed the lethal stakes, then raised the reward to a headline number. The first season featured 456 contestants battling for USD 4.56 million. The second season arrived in 2025, and the series has already been renewed for a third season. In her review of the first season, Variety’s chief TV critic Alison Herman distinguished between the original story’s message and the spinoff’s appeal. Alison Herman, the chief TV critic at Variety, wrote, “Like ‘Battle Royale’ and ‘The Hunger Games’ before it, the point of ‘Squid Game’ is that in a deeply unequal society, entertainment comes at a steep moral price.” She added, “The point of ‘The Challenge’ is that, if you don’t think too hard about it, that entertainment is still pretty fun to watch.”With celebrities now entering the mix, ‘Squid Game: The VIP Challenge’ looks set to test reputations as much as tactics.
