'Why would I not say it?': Ram Gopal Varma breaks silence on Urmila Matondkar affair rumors

In a candid interview recently, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma responded to the long-standing rumors of a romantic affair with actress Urmila Matondkar. In earlier interactions, the veteran director, known for hits like ‘Rangeela’ and ‘Satya’, compared his frequent collaboration with Urmila to his work with Amitabh Bachchan, questioning why only the former sparked such intense romantic speculation.

Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma aka RGV has finally addressed the long-standing speculation surrounding the relationship with his one-time muse, Urmila Matondkar In a candid interview recently, the director dismissed the speculation with his trademark bluntness. Addressing the “affair” that reportedly began 28 years ago during the peak of their professional collaboration, Varma clarified that while he would always “deny it.”

When asked directly about the “truth” behind the affair, RGV offered a philosophical yet firm denial stating, “You see my point… if there was a truth why would I not say it? This is a long time you’re talking about—28 years. The point is, I wouldn’t like to talk about anything that happened such a long time ago. I can always deny it, and that’s the same thing I would do [even now].”

Ram Gopal Varma’s earlier stance on link-up rumors

RGV has long maintained that his frequent casting of Urmila was driven by her immense talent rather than personal feelings. In his autobiography titled, ‘Guns & Thighs,’ the filmmaker admitted he was “enchanted” by Urmila’s screen presence and had even inspired the character of Mili in ‘Rangeela.’ Additionally, the veteran filmmaker often uses his extensive work with Amitabh Bachchan as a benchmark to highlight how the media selectively targets male-female professional pairings for gossip. The rumors were not without consequences. Reports from the 90s suggested that the speculation took a toll on RGV’s marriage to his now ex-wife, Ratna Varma. Meanwhile, Urmila Matondkar, who took a hiatus from the industry at the height of her career, recently made headlines for filing for divorce from her husband, Mohsin Akhtar Mir, in late 2024.
