Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off Maruti Suzuki’s first global battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e-Vitara, from the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat.

The model will be exported to over 100 countries, including advanced markets such as Europe and Japan, positioning India as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for EVs.

PM Modi said that the launch marked a milestone in the country’s drive towards clean mobility and India’s quest for self-reliance.

Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara is its first global strategic BEV and represents a significant step in India’s efforts to integrate into global EV supply chains. The Hansalpur plant, equipped with an automobile Gati Shakti multimodal cargo terminal, will also facilitate cost-efficient exports through direct connectivity to Mundra port.

Alongside the EV rollout, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the start of local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS lithium-ion battery plant in Gujarat — a joint venture of Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki.

“In a big boost to our battery ecosystem, production of hybrid battery electrodes will also commence at a plant in Gujarat,” Modi said in a post on social media platform X.

The government in a press release said that the plant, which is a joint venture of Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki, will boost domestic manufacturing and clean energy innovation. This development ensures that more than 80 per cent of the battery value will now be manufactured within India.
