US President Donald Trump has nominated Sergio Gor to serve as the next US Ambassador to India, while also naming him Special Envoy for South Asia and Central Asia. The dual role has sparked sharp criticism from diplomats, lawmakers, and foreign policy experts.

Gor, a current White House staffer, has long been associated with Trump’s political orbit. Known for his loyalty to the US President, he played a prominent role in promoting the ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) campaign across the US. Trump has praised Gor’s unwavering support, describing him as “a great friend, who has been at my side for many years.”

While Trump’s endorsement was enthusiastic, critics argue that Gor lacks the diplomatic experience traditionally expected for such a high-stakes appointment. India remains a key strategic partner for the US. Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, including Representative Gregory Meeks of New York’s 5th Congressional District, voiced concerns about the nomination. “At a critical time for US–India ties, we need a seasoned, credible Ambassador—not a MAGA loyalist. After firing 1300 career experts, why is Trump bloating State with an ill-defined special envoy when @State_SCA already has an Assistant Secretary?” Meeks asked in a pointed statement.

The nomination has also been criticised by several Indian experts, especially over Gor’s dual role as the Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia. It is being believed that his appointment to both roles signals a possible re-hyphenation of India–Pakistan ties, an approach India has long opposed.

Trump has positioned the appointment as a move to expand the MAGA message globally, particularly in South Asia, which he described as “the most populous region in the world.” The nomination awaits Senate confirmation.
