At least 19 people, including four journalists, were killed on Monday when an Israeli airstrike hit Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency.

Among those killed was Mariam Dagga, 33, a visual journalist who had been freelancing for The Associated Press and other media outlets since the war began. The AP said it was “shocked and saddened” to learn of her death.

Dagga was often based at Nasser Hospital, reporting on the worsening humanitarian crisis. Her recent work focused on doctors trying to save malnourished children. She had a 12-year-old son who was evacuated from Gaza earlier in the conflict.

The Qatar-based network Al Jazeera confirmed the death of its cameraman and photojournalist Mohammad Salama in the strike.

Reuters reported that its freelance cameraman Hussam al-Masri was killed, and another of its freelance photographers, Hatem Khaled, was wounded.

According to Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the Health Ministry’s records department in Gaza, the total death toll from the strike on the hospital stands at 19.

The Israeli military and the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have not commented on the incident.

The ongoing war has become one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists in modern times. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that at least 192 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began nearly two years ago. In comparison, 18 journalists have died in Ukraine’s war with Russia during the same period.

With Israel barring international journalists from freely entering Gaza, coverage of the war has heavily relied on local Palestinian reporters. Many are risking their lives to document the conflict, while also facing the same daily struggles as other civilians, including shortages of food, water, and medicine.
