Ahead of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Election, the Congress party faces a significant challenge as senior leader Bhupen Kumar Bora, who recently resigned from the party, is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party today. Bora met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Guwahati yesterday, in the presence of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP National Vice President Dilip Kumar Panda, and Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka at the state guest house. Bora, who had turned rebel after leaving Congress, claimed that nearly 50% of Assam Congress leaders with “nationalist sentiment and self-respect” are likely to join BJP by March 8. His statements signal potential major shifts in party loyalty, which could redefine electoral dynamics in Assam. Political analysts suggest this could severely weaken Congress ahead of the elections and strengthen BJP’s position in the northeastern state.
