Were Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise really rivals? Here’s what we know

Were Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise really ‘rivals’? Inside the decades-old competition and ‘bitterness’

Who doesn’t love a good ‘enemy to friends’ trope like one we see in the ‘Fast and Furious’ films, right? Of us all, Hollywood loves a good rivalry story, and there’s something about the whole Brad Pitt vs. Tom Cruise animosity thing that just grabs the attention of people. For years, fans have consumed and circulated stories about whether these two actually get along, or if there’s some secret beef simmering underneath all that star power. Both stars shot to superstardom in the ‘90s. They’ve stayed on top of their games ever since, but the big question remains: Did they ever really like each other? In fact, per Fox News, not long ago, Pitt stirred the pot again in that context. While promoting his new movie ‘F1: The Movie, he joked about still being “bitter” over losing a go-kart race to Cruise decades ago. And all of a sudden, everyone was back to talking about their supposed rivalry. So, what really happened between them?

The beginning of the ‘Pitt-Cruise’ era

It all kicked off back in 1994, when both starred in the film ‘Interview with the Vampire’. The movie was a hit, and the cherry on top: Cruise (as Lestat) and Pitt (as Louis) had this intense, memorable energy on screen. But behind the scenes? Whispers started flying almost immediately.According to The Independent, in 1995, Pitt gave an interview where he called their personalities total opposites: “he’s North Pole, I’m South.” He also admitted that the vibe of competition was always there. Sure, it wasn’t open hostility, but it wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy either. Notably, that film ended up being their only real project together.

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt: The not working together streak

So if there’s no bad blood involved, then why haven’t Pitt and Cruise worked together again? Turns out, it comes down to different career choices, not some dramatic falling out.On one hand, Cruise built his brand around wild action flicks (think ‘Top Gun’, ‘Mission: Impossible’, etc.) and does his own stunts: from hanging off planes to running on rooftops, all that.Pitt, on the other hand, mixes things up with more dramatic roles, and his action films are usually a bit more grounded. In fact, per Geo News, he even joked he’d only sign on for another Cruise movie if it was “on the ground.” Per Entertainment Weekly, Pitt even revealed that there were close calls, like when both were attached to an early version of ‘Ford v Ferrari’, but it just never lined up.

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt: Where does their relationship stand now?

Fast-forward to 2025. Pitt was out doing press for ‘F1: The Movie’ when he brought up the stories of those old go-kart races with Cruise on the ‘Interview with the Vampire’ set. Per Fox News, Pitt shared that Cruise “took me on the last corner and I’m still bitter about it 30 years later.”He was clearly kidding, but people loved this make-believe rivalry stuff between two of the biggest stars of Hollywood. In June 2025, at the London premiere of Pitt’s ‘F1: The Movie’, Cruise showed up as a surprise. Cameras caught the two hugging and laughing on the red carpet. Cruise even posted photos, congratulating Pitt and celebrating the night online. For everyone watching, it felt like proof that whatever tension there was in the past had faded. Go to Source
