In early 1980, Indian intelligence agent Ajit Doval was assigned to Islamabad, Pakistan, a significant task following his successes with the Intelligence Bureau and the Sikkim mission. The stakes were high; a single error could cost him his life and jeopardise India’s security.

D Devdutt’s book, ‘Ajit Doval – On a Mission‘, reveals that Pakistan was determined to acquire nuclear weapons by any means necessary. India had stunned the world with its first successful nuclear test in 1974, sparking Pakistan’s relentless pursuit of nuclear capabilities, supported by China and North Korea. India needed to uncover this secret, and Ajit Doval, dubbed the Super Cop, was entrusted with the mission.

Mission To Reach Pakistan’s Nuclear Fortress

According to the book, Doval’s objective was the Khan Research Centre in Kahuta village, near Islamabad, a simple village on the surface, but a heavily guarded hub for Pakistan’s nuclear programme. Doval understood the gravity of his mission; failure to obtain evidence from here would enable Pakistan to emerge as a nuclear power.

As described in the book, the challenge was penetrating the centre’s tight security. Doval ingeniously disguised himself as a beggar.

Doval Entered Barber Shop Disguised As Beggar

According to the book, for several days, Doval roamed the streets of Kahuta disguised as a beggar. Passersby would toss him alms, unaware that his sharp eyes were tracking every movement. One day, his attention fell on a small barber shop, frequented daily by scientists of the Khan Research Centre. The book mentioned that Doval sat outside like any other beggar, but his true focus was on the strands of hair scattered across the floor inside.

Pakistan’s Nuclear Secret In Strands Of Hair

As described in the book, Doval quietly collected the hair and sent it to India. Tests revealed traces of radiation and uranium, confirming Pakistan’s secret nuclear program. With this single move, he exposed the blueprint of Pakistan’s nuclear ambitions.

Risked Death, Secured The Nation

Living undercover in Pakistan for six years, Doval faced constant danger, but his efforts enabled Indian intelligence to fully grasp the extent of Pakistan’s nuclear aspirations, providing vital information to safeguard India’s security.
