A simple roadside halt by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during his ‘Voter Rights Yatra’ on August 24 has become the biggest talking point in Purnia, Bihar. On Sunday, Gandhi, accompanied by grand alliance partners Tejashwi Yadav, Mukesh Sahni, Pappu Yadav, Bima Bharti and several other senior leaders, suddenly stopped his convoy at ‘Apna Dhaba‘ in Garhbaneli on the National Highway. What followed left both locals and the dhaba staff in disbelief.

Instead of moving quickly past the stop, Gandhi sat down for nearly half an hour, drank tea, ate Maggi, and even tasted Kurkure. Locals say the relaxed manner of the leaders drew a large crowd within minutes, eager to watch the unusual sight of the Congress scion enjoying a modest roadside meal.

When News18 team later reached Apna Dhaba, the owner Amrit Kumar Sah and his staff Surendra Kumar Poddar still looked overwhelmed. They admitted they had never thought or seen such a thing in their life till date. The owner recalled that the dhaba has been serving customers for 13 years in the same spot, but nothing like this had ever happened before.

The stop was entirely unplanned. “Suddenly the shopkeeper and the shop staff were shocked as soon as he came to his dhaba,” said locals who watched the scene. In the rush, the dhaba served tea, Maggi and Kurkure to Gandhi and the other alliance leaders, while a crowd jostled to get close.

The total bill came to about Rs 100, but Gandhi stunned everyone by handing over Rs 1,000 before leaving. “For the first time in their lives a big leader has hugged them and asked about their well-being by putting his hand on their shoulders,” the staff said emotionally.

The gesture and the simplicity of the visit have since earned Rahul Gandhi and his allies widespread praise across Purnia.
