Political Flashpoint: Batuk Controversy Sparks Debate in Uttar Pradesh

The issue of batuks has intensified political debate in Uttar Pradesh following a controversy during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj. On the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a Shankaracharya was proceeding toward the Sangam for a ceremonial holy dip along with his batuks when a dispute reportedly broke out with police over the issue of alighting from the palanquin. The situation escalated, and allegations surfaced that police personnel forcibly removed members of the group and misbehaved with the batuks, including claims of pulling their shikhas. Amid the controversy, the Shankaracharya returned without taking the holy dip. After the incident, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak strongly condemned the alleged misconduct, calling it a “grave sin” and stating that such actions were inexcusable. He assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible. Following his statement, several batuks visited his residence in Lucknow to express gratitude. The Deputy Chief Minister welcomed them, applied tilak on their foreheads, and honored them with flowers. The episode has since become a significant political issue in the state.
