Indian-origin man arrested in Singapore for harassing 22-year-old woman, posed as victim’s father’s friend

An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to five months in jail in Singapore for touching a woman inappropriately, The Straits Times reports.42-year-old Om Kumar Rai pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced on Friday. The court heard that he approached a 22-year-old woman in the early hours of June 17, 2025, claiming to be her father’s workmate.Rai tried to strike up a conversation with the woman before extending his hand. “Instead of returning the handshake, the accused held onto the victim’s right hand and kissed the back of her right hand once,” Deputy Public Prosecutors Tay Jia En and Ng Xin Yu told the court. Rai repeated this action twice. The woman attempted to pull her hand away the second time, but Rai refused to let go. He then guided her to the foot of a staircase landing, where he molested her. The woman managed to push him away before making her way to the lift and heading home. She later informed her parents about the incident, who filed a police report at around 9 am the same day.The prosecutors described Rai’s contact with the victim as “undoubtedly intrusive” and recommended a jail term of five to six months. Under Singapore law, the use of criminal force with the intent to outrage modesty can result in up to three years in jail, fines, caning, or a combination of these punishments. The Straits Times reported that the victim’s name and the location of the incident were redacted from court documents.Rai had claimed he was her father’s workmate and initially tried to engage her in conversation. He then took the woman to a secluded area on the pretext of talking before molesting her, the court heard.
