A major political controversy has erupted in Maharashtra after state Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal compared Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan. Sapkal stated that both leaders fought against oppression and that Tipu Sultan’s struggle against the British should be viewed on par with Shivaji Maharaj’s fight for Swarajya. His remarks triggered widespread protests across the state, with BJP leaders and several Hindu organizations accusing him of insulting Maratha pride and Maharashtra’s historical legacy. A case was registered against Sapkal in Pune, and demonstrations were held with slogans and poster burnings. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized the statement as shameful, asserting that Shivaji Maharaj symbolizes honor and self-rule for the state. Meanwhile, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi defended Tipu Sultan, highlighting his resistance against the British and references made by historical figures about his legacy. The controversy, which began over the display of Tipu Sultan’s image in a civic office, has now escalated into a broader political and ideological battle in Maharashtra.
