Anurag slams the social media backlash against critics after ‘Dhurandhar’

Anurag Kashyap slams the social media backlash against critics after 'Dhurandhar' says it was all 'co-ordinated', lauds Aditya Dhar

‘Dhurandhar’ proved to be the biggest grossing film of Indian cinema and made history but on the first day when it released, it did not get all good reviews. There were many critics who gave bad reviews to the film and some also called it a propaganda film. However, it eventually went on to win over the audience. Now filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has slammed the critics and appreciated director Aditya Dhar for the way he has made the film. Kashyap who is gearing up for the release of his film ‘Kennedy’ on OTT, said during a chat with Sucharita Tyagi, “Jo cheez galat hai voh galat hai, jo sahi hai voh shi hai (What is wrong, it’s wrong, and what is right, is right). How I like something does not mean I will force my opinion on someone else,” he said, underscoring his belief in balanced critique.Kashyap also condemned the online trolling directed at reviewers in the wake of the film’s release, calling the attacks “uncalled for.” He revealed that he was among the few members of the industry who publicly shared the Film Critics Guild’s statement addressing “targeted attacks, harassment, and hate directed toward film critics.”Interestingly, Kashyap himself faced pushback for praising certain aspects of the movie. He suggested that much of the outrage was manufactured rather than spontaneous. “This backlash thing is a social media construct and a lot of it is not organic,” he remarked, adding that much of it appeared “all coordinated.”When it came to the film’s more controversial elements, the 53-year-old director admitted he would not gloss over problematic portions. At the same time, he expressed admiration for the conviction behind the filmmaking. “I will not conceal the things that were problematic, but I am seeing something else as well. As a filmmaker, I see the courage. Somebody who has to fight through a system to do a certain thing and the belief in it when everybody backs out because the film is getting too long, putting in their own money, doing things,” he explained. He specifically highlighted the technical precision of a torture sequence featuring Arjun Rampal. “I know, as a filmmaker, how much time it takes. Any filmmaker would be like, ‘Let’s do this in VFX’. The patience and time to do it as a filmmaker and to be so precise. So for me, as a filmmaker, I am marvelling at that,” Kashyap noted.’Dhurandhar’ stars Ranveer Singh, Sara Arjun, R Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt and Rakesh Bedi in key roles. The second part of the film is set to release on March 19. Go to Source
