'Right engine caught fire': Turkish Airlines with 236 on board makes emergency landing in Kolkata

NEW DELHI: A Turkish Airlines flight’s made an emergency landing in Kolkata after its right engine caught fire minutes after take-off from Kathmandu airport on Wednesday. The plane had 236 people on board, including 11 crew members.”The Turkish Airlines with flight number ‘THY-727’ caught fire within four minutes of the take off, the right engine caught fire. The flight took off at 1:28 PM (Local Time),” Teknath Sitaula, general manager of Tribhuvan International Airport told ANI.The pilot had alerted Kolkata air traffic control about a possible fire in the right engine, and the aircraft landed safely at 2.49pm with all 236 passengers on board.The director of Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport said a full emergency was declared for the Turkish Airlines flight travelling from Kathmandu to Istanbul.The Turkish Airlines A330-303 aircraft is currently at Kolkata Airport and a probe is underway.The official said the pilots diverted the aircraft to the west of Kathmandu and shut down the right engine, keeping the plane airborne for around 10 minutes. Following the report, Tribhuvan International Airport was shut for about 15 minutes.
