India’s new customs rules bring duty-free relief on gold, electronics for UAE travellers

For the millions of Indians living in the UAE, the trip back home usually involves suitcases filled with gifts, chocolates, and the latest electronics bought in Dubai. However, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has recently updated the “Duty-Free Allowance” for passengers arriving from international destinations. Currently, an Indian resident or a foreigner residing in India can carry items worth up to ₹50,000 duty-free in their baggage, provided they have stayed abroad for more than three days. It is important to remember that this limit applies to “used personal effects” and travel souvenirs; it does not include high-value commercial quantities intended for resale.

India raises duty-free limit

Under the new rules:

  • Residents of India and Indian-origin travellers (including those living in the UAE) can now bring goods worth up to ₹75,000 duty-free.
  • Foreign tourists visiting India have a separate duty-free limit of ₹25,000 for personal items.
  • Foreign nationals with valid non-tourist visas (for work or other purposes) are also eligible for the ₹75,000 allowance.
  • Airline crew members receive a modest ₹2,500 duty-free limit.

Passengers must carry items on their person or in bona fide accompanied baggage for them to qualify under the duty-free umbrella. Goods beyond the allowed value will be subject to customs duty.

Perks for UAE shoppers

For many UAE-based travellers, especially those visiting India for family trips or celebrations, the higher allowance means they can bring back more purchases without extra taxes. Popular duty-free categories include gadgets, clothing, accessories, and personal effects, as long as they are for personal use.One notable update is that one laptop or notebook per passenger above 18 can be brought into India duty-free on top of the ₹75,000 allowance, giving tech buyers extra breathing room when planning trips. Every passenger is allowed to carry up to 2 liters of liquor or wine and 100 cigarettes (or 25 cigars) without paying duty. New provisions also allow for temporary import and export of items (like cameras or equipment taken for short stays) with special certificates, reducing hassle for travellers who need to use professional gear abroad.

Carrying jewelry?

Another important change, welcomed by many UAE travellers, is the shift in jewellery allowance. Instead of confusing old value caps, the rules now use a weight-based system for returning residents and Indian-origin visitors who have lived abroad for more than one year:

  • Female passengers: up to 40 grams duty-free
  • Other passengers: up to 20 grams duty-free

This approach aligns customs with actual travel realities and reduces disputes at airport counters. The rules also simplify Transfer of Residence (ToR) benefits, allowing long-term residents returning from the UAE to enjoy higher duty-free limits when bringing household items home.To improve passenger convenience further, India has rolled out electronic and advanced baggage declaration options, helping flyers plan and declare their items before landing for faster airport clearance. The Ministry of Finance in India has digitized many customs processes, meaning officials can now cross-reference high-value purchases more easily. If you are carrying items that exceed the free allowance, the best advice is to head straight to the Red Channel and declare them. Failing to declare can lead to the confiscation of items, heavy fines, or even legal action. Go to Source
