Celina Jaitly, who filed for divorce from her husband Peter Haag in November last year at an Andheri court in Mumbai, has opened up about the reality behind her marriage in a deeply personal social media post. The divorce plea was filed on grounds of domestic violence and abuse, leaving many surprised, especially since Celina had often shared affectionate family moments with Haag and their children online.In her latest post, Celina reflected on what she calls a “15-year-old broken marriage” and the emotional cost of surviving it.“My biggest lesson is that: You cannot change someone by loving them harder. Love cannot fix what is already broken,” she wrote.
‘A marriage lived in letters of love, pain & survival’
Describing writing as her emotional refuge, Celina explained how words became her only voice during moments when she felt unheard.“For all who follow my writings know how I express myself best… Something I used whenever I couldn’t speak, whenever I wasn’t heard,” she shared, adding that letters became a way to preserve her marriage and protect her family.She revealed that her early writings were attempts to “elevate my husband’s ego,” convey commitment, and heal fractures in the relationship. However, with time, the tone of her writing changed.“My letters began to reflect the reality I was living. They spoke of the abuse I was witnessing and enduring, the repeated silencing of my voice, the absence of being heard, and the persistent pattern of blame placed upon me,” she stated.
‘My expressions of love were acts of endurance’
Addressing assumptions often made about abusive marriages, Celina clarified that public displays of affection do not negate suffering.“My expressions of love were acts of endurance and survival, not evidence of the absence of abuse,” she wrote, adding that many people stay in abusive relationships because of hope, fear, responsibility, and love.“They stay & continue to show love not because they are weak, but because hope, fear, responsibility & love are often the tools that keep them alive,” she noted.
What Celina Jaitly’s lawyer said about Peter Haag’s divorce filing
According to Celina’s lawyer, Peter Haag had filed for divorce last year in an Austrian court after she allegedly discovered that properties in Vienna were being sold without her knowledge. In the Austrian case, Haag is reportedly attempting to establish that Celina has no claim over any of their shared properties.The lawyer further alleged that Haag is blaming Celina for the breakdown of the marriage. While Celina had requested a mutual-consent divorce for the sake of their children, Haag was unwilling to agree.
Maintenance, custody and compensation claims
Represented by Karanjawala & Co., Celina has sought Rs 10 lakh per month as maintenance and requested the court to restrain Haag from entering her Mumbai residence. She has also sought custody of their three children, who are currently living with their father in Austria. Additionally, the actor has demanded Rs 50 crore as compensation, citing loss of earnings allegedly caused by her husband. Celina Jaitly and Peter Haag married in 2010.
