Flying taxis in downtown Dubai? Residents get a shock preview near Dubai Mall

For a city used to supercars, something even more exotic recently stopped traffic near Dubai Mall. Residents and tourists were given an exclusive, hands-on look at the Joby S4 electric air taxi, the very aircraft slated to take to the skies in early 2026. Parked in the heart of Downtown Dubai, the sleek, white aircraft served as a tangible reminder that the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) isn’t just talking about the future, they are building it. Passers by were invited to sit in the cockpit and explore the four-passenger cabin, turning what used to be a “Jetsons” fantasy into a reality you can touch.

Dubai taxis take to the skies

Dubai is now aiming to launch commercial air taxi operations as soon as 2026. According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and partners such as Joby Aviation and Skyports Infrastructure:

  • The first phase of the service will begin in early 2026, with flights connecting main vertiports.
  • A network of landing hubs will help residents and tourists skip traffic and make quick journeys, for example, cutting travel time from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah from about 45 minutes by car to roughly 10-12 minutes by air.
  • The RTA plans public awareness campaigns to explain safety features and how the service will operate.

Officials have also hinted that, while the official operational launch is scheduled for 2026, commercial trials and pilots could begin even earlier as part of safety testing and certification procedures.

Budget 2026

Dubai’s strategy goes beyond sightseeing flights, the goal is a fully integrated urban air transport system that complements existing public transport like the metro, buses and regular taxis.

Where you’ll catch your ride

Dubai isn’t just buying planes; it’s building a new type of airport. The RTA, in partnership with Skyports Infrastructure, is currently developing four primary “Vertiports” to kickstart the service. These hubs will be located at Dubai International Airport (DXB), Downtown (near Dubai Mall), Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. The vertiports are designed to be integrated into existing transport hubs, allowing you to step off the Metro and into an air taxi in minutes. Each station will feature high-speed charging pods, allowing the aircraft to “refuel” while passengers board, ensuring the taxis are back in the air almost immediately.

Luxury travel at “Uber” prices?

While air travel sounds like a luxury reserved for the elite, the RTA and Joby Aviation have a more democratic vision. The “Common Impact” of this project is to eventually make air taxis a viable public transport option. Initial pricing is expected to be comparable to a premium limousine service, but as the fleet grows, the goal is to bring costs down to the level of a standard ride-hailing app. For the average resident, this means the “gift of time.” Imagine finishing work in Downtown and being home in the Marina before your coffee gets cold, all while skipping the congestion of Sheikh Zayed Road.
