AR Rahman says messages often get distorted along the way

AR Rahman says messages often get distorted along the way, ‘The problem with the world is..’

AR Rahman recently spoke about how messages often get distorted, saying, “The problem with the world is how messages get corrupted on the way.” He promoted his silent film ‘Gandhi Talks’ on The Great Indian Kapil Show and also discussed a “power shift” in Bollywood that, he said, affected creative opportunities.

Last month, AR Rahman grabbed attention after saying that the Hindi film industry might have become more “communal” in recent times. He later explained that people had taken his words the wrong way. Now, the Oscar-winning composer said that the whisper game played on the Tv show was a good example of how messages can change or get mixed up as they’re passed along.

AR Rahman talks about miscommunication

During the appearance in the latest episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, he said, “This is a good exercise to see how information gets misunderstood. Different states, different cultures. The problem with the world is this, how messages get corrupted on the way”.

AR Rahman promotes his silent film ‘Gandhi Talks’

AR Rahman joined the show to talk about his new project, the silent film ‘Gandhi Talks’, directed by Kishor Pandurang Belekar. He was accompanied by the film’s stars Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Siddharth Jadhav. While discussing the soundtrack of Gandhi Talks, Rahman shared that working on a film without dialogues offered both freedom and pressure. “If there are no dialogues, it’s such a celebration of music. Because you have all the real estate to do music, but also terrifying because people will be judging. Every note will be exposed,” he said. Rahman also praised director Kishor Pandurang Belekar, calling him the first filmmaker who fully embraced every tune he created. “He’s the first director who never came and told me anything negative and said, ‘I don’t like this.’ Whatever I give, he takes it. Even if I play ‘tang’, he would say yes,” quipped the Oscar-winning composer.

AR Rahman opens up about power shift in Bollywood

However, during his chat with BBC Asian Network, AR Rahman opened up about why he has been getting fewer opportunities in the Hindi film industry over the past eight years. He attributed it to a “power shift” within the industry, saying, “Maybe in the past eight years because a power shift has happened and people who are not creative have the power now. It might be a communal thing also… but it is not in my face. It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers.” His statement quickly sparked conversations online, leading him to issue a clarification shortly after.
