‘Americans who might hate Indians…’: Social media reacts to free samosas given at anti‑ICE protests in Minnesota

After videos of an Indian restaurant distributing free samosas to protesters in an anti-ICE rally in Minnesota went viral, social media had a mixed reaction about the gesture. Some users claimed that such activities promote the anti-India rhetoric among Americans, while some said that this hospitality is clearly a part of Indians and their culture. The footage comes as protests continue across Minnesota against operations by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Demonstrations escalated mainly due to the death of two US citizens at the hands of federal agents: Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti last week, and Minnesota mother Renee Nicole Good earlier this month. The restaurant that served the fried snack is called “Curry Corner.” It is a small Indian eatery in Northeast Minneapolis. Owners announced on Instagram that they were temporarily closing their dining room due to safety concerns amid the Trump administration’s crackdown.Instead of simply closing up and waiting, the restaurant’s staff decided to step outside and help people on the streets. Videos shared online show employees handing out freshly prepared samosas and warm meals to anti‑ICE demonstrators.

Here is what social media users said:

  • An Indian restaurant distributing Samosas to anti ICE protest. Such things will only bring more hate towards already anti Indian hate in US.
  • They are americans. Let them do what they want and which political spectrum they want to tilt towards.
  • Americans who might hate Indians more for this, they hate Indians already anyway, and no amount of boot licking will change that fact
  • I have a lot of issues with how Indian-American and Indian culture has evolved in recent year but is the most beautiful thing i’ve seen in a while.
  • I am an Indian and am against this. When you are in someone else’s country then live by their rules, don’t dictate yours. This person should be deported ASAP.

The restaurant also shared its message on social media: “We are closed but we are still gonna go out and support our community,” they posted. It added: “Today we took Curry Corner into downtown Minneapolis to support our community. We went out to share warm samosas and meals with those protesting and standing up for what they believe in.”Curry Corner’s closure put financial strain on the family‑run business. In an Instagram post, the owners shared that they had started a GoFundMe campaign to support their staff during the shutdown. The fundraiser had raised more than $25,000.
