Several Feared Dead In Tour Bus Crash On I-90 In New York; Rescue Efforts Underway

Several people are feared dead following a devastating tour bus crash in New York on Friday. According to New York State Police, the incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, close to Exit 48A on the eastbound side. The exact number of fatalities and injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Authorities have stated that at least one child is among the deceased. Several other individuals sustained injuries, and many are still reported to be trapped under or around the bus. State Police noted that the vehicle was carrying over 50 passengers at the time of the crash. Some passengers were ejected from the bus and have since been rescued.

In response to the fatal accident, the New York State Thruway Authority shut down I-90 in both directions between Exit 48A and Exit 49. Drivers have been advised to take alternate routes. According to News Nation, as of 1:30 p.m. ET, all eastbound drivers were being diverted off the highway at Exit 48A.

Peter Cutler, Vice President of Communications and Internal Affairs at ECMC, confirmed that the hospital received a “mass casualty notification.” He added that physicians and medical teams were being sent to the crash site to assist with emergency care.

Media outlet WIVB reported that two cranes were brought to the scene as part of the rescue efforts. New York State Police said the bus was traveling from Niagara Falls and was believed to be en route to New York City. The passengers reportedly include individuals of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino nationalities.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that she had been “briefed on the tragic tour bus accident” and confirmed that a rescue operation is ongoing. “My team is coordinating closely with @nyspolice and local officials who are working to rescue and provide assistance to everyone involved,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

So far, authorities have not released additional details about the identities of those injured or killed in the crash.
