Trump teases another run for president — what does he mean by a ‘fourth’ term?

While Americans are confused between JD Vance or a new name, Mark Rubio, for the 2028 presidential election, Donald Trump has dropped a new hint. With a single all-caps Truth Social post musing about a “fourth term,” the president once again sent the internet into a familiar frenzy, blurring the line between political trolling, constitutional amnesia, and classic Trump-style baiting. On his Truth Social platform, Trump said: “RECORD NUMBERS ALL OVER THE PLACE! SHOULD I TRY FOR A FOURTH TERM?” Trump has repeatedly teased the unconstitutional idea of serving a third term. However, he did appear to rule it out in October and has since spoken about potential heirs to his MAGA fiefdom, such as Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

What Trump meant by a “fourth” term?

It is unclear with this “fourth” term. The remark could reference his false claim that he won the 2020 election against Joe Biden, so this term is essentially his “third,” or it could suggest a bid to serve two additional terms. Either way, the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution explicitly prohibits it.

‘We have a good bench’: Trump

In a separate interview that aired Wednesday evening on NewsNation’s “Katie Pavlich Tonight,” President Trump said the Republican Party had “a good bench” of potential candidates to run for the White House in 2028, but he declined to name an early favourite to run as his successor.Asked whether there was a likely GOP candidate who could carry on his legacy, he said: “I hope so. And we certainly have a good bench. We have some very talented people.”He said he had early favourites but would not name them. “I do, but it’s so early. You know, I mean, I do actually. But it’s so early that it’s, you know, I don’t like to,” Trump told host Katie Pavlich.Pressed for specific names, he said: “Look, we have great people. You see what’s happening. I mean the people that we have in so many — I’m not just talking about one or two — we have so many great people,” the president said. When Pavlich asked, “Who’s ‘so many’?” Trump replied: “Well, JD’s been great. Marco has been great. Scott’s been great. Everybody’s been great,” referring to Vice President Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.“Look at Tom Homan and Kristi, the job they’ve done with security,” he continued, referring to his border czar and Homeland Security Kristi Noem, respectively.“I could name 20 people that are phenomenal,” Trump added. The exchange came as Republicans geared up for the 2026 midterms following a series of losses in last year’s races. A new poll from Emerson College showed Democrats leading a hypothetical race with 48.1 percent support to the GOP’s 41.7 percent. The other 10.2 percent were undecided, according to the survey.Trump also acknowledged the concerns but downplayed the expectations, telling Fox News in an interview earlier this month that the president’s party “always loses.”

Can Trump apply for fourth term?

And the answer is “No.” According to the 22nd Amendment, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.”

Is there any possibility to make any change in Article?

The Section 2 of the 22nd Amendment states that this article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.
