Uttar Pradesh is placing renewed focus on its religious sites, cultural traditions and historical heritage, officials said.Major developments include the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya and the Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor in Varanasi. The Mahakumbh in Prayagraj last year saw participation from more than 66 crore devotees.
Beyond major religious centres the initiatives include creation of 12 pilgrimage circuits, such as the Ramayana and Buddhist circuits, aimed at promoting organised religious tourism. District-level cultural councils and tourism hubs have also been set up across all assembly constituencies to document local traditions and heritage.In 2024, Uttar Pradesh recorded around 66 crore tourist visits, including more than 14 lakh foreign tourists. Events such as the Deepotsav in Ayodhya, where over 25 lakh lamps were lit, have also received international attention, including recognition from Guinness World Records.In addition, traditional crafts are being promoted under the One District One Product scheme. The state has received GI tags for 77 products, including Bhadohi carpets and Nizamabad pottery. Plans have also been announced for a Veda Science Study Centre at Naimisharanya to support the study of ancient Indian texts.
