Nitin Nabin elected national BJP president unopposed: To take charge January 20; PM Modi to attend event

NEW DELHI: BJP leader Nitin Nabin has been elected unopposed as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party and will formally take charge on January 20. The transition ceremony, scheduled for 11.30 am at the party headquarters, will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, and defence minister Rajnath Singh, and other senior party members.A press statement from the party’s national returning officer, Dr K Laxman, said that the election process began after 30 of the BJP’s 36 State Presidents were elected, surpassing the minimum requirement of 50 per cent. “On 16th January 2026, Notification of Schedule of Events was announced & Electoral Roll was published. As per the schedule, today, on 19th January 2026 (Monday), the Nomination Process was completed between 2 PM to 4 PM,” release said. The statement added that 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in favour of Nitin Nabin. “On scrutiny, all sets of Nomination Papers were found to be duly filled up in the required format and were valid. Now, after the period of withdrawal, in my capacity of National Returning Officer, Sangathan Parv, Bharatiya Janata Party, I hereby announce that only 1 name, that of Shri Nitin Nabin, has been proposed for the post of National President of Bharatiya Janata Party,” Dr Laxman said. At 45 years old, Nitin Nabin represents a next-generation leadership shift within the BJP, coinciding with the party’s 45-year history. Analysts view his elevation as part of the BJP’s strategy to promote younger leaders while consolidating organizational leadership ahead of future elections. The uncontested election and smooth transition reflect the party’s internal consensus-building and procedural discipline, with all stages of nomination, scrutiny, and withdrawal conducted under the supervision of the national returning officer.
