US President Donald Trump on Friday said that America’s capital, Washington DC, is becoming safer, with crowds returning and a positive spirit. He praised the DC National Guard and Police for their strong efforts in maintaining law and order, emphasising that they are serious about keeping the city safe.

“Washington, D.C. is SAFE AGAIN! The crowds are coming back, the spirit is high, and our D.C. National Guard and Police are doing a fantastic job. They are out in force, and are NOT PLAYING GAMES!!! As bad as it sounds to say, there were no murders this week for the first time in memory,” read his post.

He also criticised Mayor Muriel Bowser, accusing her of providing false and misleading crime statistics. He warned that if the situation does not improve or the reporting is not accurate, there could be serious consequences, including the possibility of the federal government taking full control of the city.

“Mayor Muriel Bowser must immediately stop giving false and highly inaccurate crime figures, or bad things will happen, including a complete and total Federal takeover of the City! Washington D.C. will soon be great again!!!,”he wrote on X.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump declared his crime crackdown in the nation’s capital a success as he visited federal officers deployed under his plan.

President Trump visited the U.S. Park Police headquarters in Southeast Washington, DC, where he showed support for officers by bringing pizza and hamburgers. Speaking to several hundred uniformed personnel, he praised their efforts, claiming that their work has contributed to a decrease in crime. “It’s like a different place,” he said. “Everybody is safe now.”

Earlier that day, Trump had announced plans to join law enforcement on patrol during his visit, but the ride-along did not take place.

Last week, citing a surge in violent crime, Trump declared a public safety emergency in the city. He deployed National Guard troops and federal agents to the streets and asserted temporary control over the city’s police department—an unprecedented exercise of presidential authority.

Meanwhile, DC Mayor Muriel questioned the masked federal officers and said that they should do their jobs in a lawful manner.

“Why do they need masks? They’re federal officials. They’re paid by taxpayers. They should be doing their jobs in a way that’s lawful and constitutional, and that’s part of the job,” she said. “And so I don’t, I don’t know why anybody needs to wear a mask.”
