NIA leadership change: 1994-batch IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal appointed as director general; tenure till August 2028

NEW DELHI: Senior Indian Police Service officer Rakesh Aggarwal was on Wednesday appointed as the director general of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as Special Director General in the anti-terror agency. He had also been holding the additional charge of the DG, NIA, prior to this formal appointment.According to an order issued by the personnel ministry, the appointments committee of the Cabinet has approved Aggarwal’s appointment to the top post of the NIA. His tenure as director general will continue until August 31, 2028, which coincides with the date of his superannuation, as per news agency PTI.The National Investigation Agency is India’s premier counter-terrorism probe body and handles cases related to terrorism, national security and other offences having cross-border implications. With his appointment, Aggarwal formally takes charge of leading the NIA’s operational and investigative mandate for the remainder of his service tenure.
