BMC & 29 Civic Body Polls Today: Final Campaign Ends Ahead of Crucial Mumbai Verdict

The country’s richest municipal corporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), along with 29 other civic bodies in Maharashtra, goes to polls on Thursday, 15 January 2026. Today marks the final day of campaigning, with all political parties intensifying efforts until 6 PM, after which election campaigning will officially conclude. Voter attention is focused on the BMC elections, widely regarded as the most decisive, with results to be announced on 16 January. The campaign has been heated, with parties leveraging identity, religion, and development issues to consolidate voter support. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde conducted roadshows and rallies in key constituencies like Borivali and Nagpur, highlighting the high stakes involved. Alliances have shifted significantly: Ajit Pawar has handed over leadership to Nawab Malik, contesting separately from the Mahayuti alliance, while the Thackeray brothers’ Mahavikas Aghadi remains cohesive. The city’s diverse voter base—25-30% Marathi, 20-25% North Indian, 17-18% Marwari/Gujarati, and 20-21% Muslim—ensures no single bloc can dominate, making coalition strategy critical. This year, BMC campaigning also witnessed cultural influencers and actors joining rallies to appeal to specific voter groups. Analysts suggest that winning in Mumbai will require meticulous voter engagement and alliance coordination, as historical vote patterns alone will not guarantee victory.
