US Congressman Randy Fine proposes legislation to annex Greenland — what’s in the bill?

Trump’s Greenland push: US Congressman Randy Fine proposes legislation to annex island — what's in the bill?

.

US Republican Congressman Randy Fine on Monday introduced a bill that seeks the annexation of Greenland and lays the ground for the Arctic island to eventually become a US state. The bill comes amid renewed comments by US president Donald Trump about taking control of Greenland.Fine, a member of the US House of Representatives from Florida, announced on X that he had introduced the “Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act”. In his post, Fine linked the proposal to concerns about Russia and China expanding their presence in the Arctic. He argued that acquiring Greenland would prevent US rivals from gaining control over the region and would strengthen America’s security in the north. In an official statement released by his office, Fine described Greenland as a “vital national security asset”. He said control of the island would shape who dominates Arctic shipping lanes and the broader security framework protecting the United States.

How bill could lead to annexation

  • The bill authorises the US president to pursue negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark to annex or otherwise acquire Greenland as a US territory.
  • It allows the president to use all necessary means, as permitted by law, to bring Greenland into the United States.
  • According to the bill, after any acquisition, the president must submit a report to Congress outlining changes needed in federal law to admit Greenland as a US state.
  • Statehood would depend on Greenland adopting a constitution that is republican in form and consistent with the US Constitution.
