Anti‑Iranian protests in Los Angeles turn chaotic after truck drives into crowd — What we know so far

A peaceful demonstration in support of protests in Iran turned chaotic on Sunday in Los Angeles when a U‑Haul truck drove into a crowd of demonstrators. The rally drew hundreds of people expressing solidarity with anti‑Iranian regime protests abroad. Video and eyewitness accounts show the truck entering the area around 3.30pm, causing protesters to scramble out of the way as it moved through the street. Officers later stopped the vehicle several blocks away and took the driver into custody. One person was struck by the truck but did not suffer serious injuries, and others declined medical transport after being checked by emergency crews. After the truck entered the crowd, many protesters swarmed the vehicle. Footage shows people surrounding the truck, smashing its windows, attempting to remove signs from its side and confronting the driver. Some demonstrators tried to pull the driver out of the vehicle and struck it with flagpoles before police pushed the crowd back. Authorities eventually escorted the driver into custody as the situation remained tense at the scene.Los Angeles police confirmed that the adult male driver was detained “pending further investigation”. Captain Mike Bland of the LAPD said the incident is under review and could lead to assault charges, with the vehicle being treated as a possible deadly weapon. The identity of the driver or the details are still not public as of Monday. The truck displayed political slogans referencing Iran’s 1953 coup, but officials have not called the event a terrorist act. Law enforcement has asked for witness footage and statements to help clarify what occurred. The protest in Westwood was part of a wave of demonstrations by Iranian communities and supporters across the world reacting to protests and a harsh government response in Iran itself. Unrest in the Middle East has drawn global attention, with many in the diaspora calling for change and an end to violent crackdowns under the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
