Darren Jason Watkins Jr, known worldwide as IShowSpeed, made history on Sunday, January 11, during his very first day in Kenya. Within hours of landing in Nairobi, his YouTube channel crossed 48 million subscribers, a huge milestone in his career. The jump came fast. More than 360,000 new subscribers joined his channel during his time in Kenya alone. Speed is in the country for his 28-day “Speed Does Africa Tour.” He livestreamed almost everything from the moment he arrived. Fans followed him from the airport to the streets of Nairobi. Crowds gathered everywhere he went, both online and in person.While celebrating on stream, Speed shared his emotions clearly and openly. He said, “I love you all so much. We gained 360,000 subscribers and reached 48 million. Kenya, we will never forget you. Kenya is number one right now.” His live stream pulled in over 200,000 viewers at one time, making it one of the biggest live audiences ever for a YouTuber. By Sunday afternoon, his name was mentioned more than 142,000 times on X, showing how big the moment was.

As the day moved forward, Speed continued to explore the city while staying live. He visited Upper Hill High School, the Mukuru affordable housing project, Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Kenyatta Market, Uhuru Park, and Nairobi National Park. Everywhere he went, fans followed, waved, and cheered.At Upper Hill High School, Speed met Olympic javelin champion Julius Yego, adding a strong sports moment to the day. Later, in Nairobi’s Central Business District, he joined the Safari Rally experience by riding in a rally car. He also enjoyed the city’s famous matatu culture, smiling and reacting live on stream.The day ended with a helicopter ride over Nairobi. From the air, Speed spotted the under-construction Talanta Stadium, which is set to be renamed Raila Odinga Stadium.Before his arrival, Kenya’s leaders also shared their welcome. President William Ruto spoke directly to him and said, “Jambo, IShowSpeed, welcome to Kenya, karibu Kenya. Kenya is not just another country; Kenya is a pulse, a feeling. Kenya is home. This is magical Kenya, the origin of wonders.”Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano also met Speed briefly at the KICC rooftop before his helicopter tour. Kenya is one of many stops on his Africa journey, after visits to South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.
