North Korea on Saturday accused South Korea of flying drones across their shared border this week, warning that Seoul would ‘pay a dear price’ for what it called a serial encroachment upon its sovereignty. South Korea rejected the allegations, saying it neither conducted such operations nor possesses the type of drones shown by the North.According to a statement from the General Staff of North Korea’s Korean People’s Army, carried by state media, North Korean forces used electronic warfare equipment to bring down a South Korean drone flying over a border town. The military claimed the drone was fitted with two cameras and had filmed unspecified areas inside North Korea. Pyongyang also alleged that another South Korean drone entered its airspace on September 27 before crashing after electronic strikes, with authorities later recovering video data of “major objects” in the country.“We strongly denounce the hooligans’ serial outrageous encroachment upon our sovereignty,” the statement said, adding that South Korea’s military “will be surely forced to pay a dear price for their unpardonable hysteria.” South Korea’s defence ministry said it did not operate drones at the times cited by North Korea and does not own the drone models described. Senior official Kim Hong-Cheol said authorities would investigate whether civilians were responsible for any drone flights and stressed that Seoul has no intention of provoking Pyongyang, as per AP.As per AFP, North Korea said it tracked and shot down a drone near the city of Kaesong earlier this month, releasing photos of wreckage and aerial images it claimed were taken by the aircraft. South Korean defence minister Ahn Gyu-back said the drone shown was “not a model operated by our military,” while President Lee Jae Myung’s office said a national security meeting would be held to discuss the issue.
