Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma On Aadhaar Issuance: Strict Checks To Prevent Illegal Entries

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced tighter scrutiny over Aadhaar distribution in the state. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sarma said that except for “a few sections of people” who will be given special consideration, the rest of the population in Assam has already been issued Aadhaar cards.

He further clarified that going forward, fresh Aadhaar cards will only be issued under exceptional circumstances and exclusively by Deputy Commissioners. “In Assam, barring a few sections of people, for whom we will be making an exception, everyone else has received an Aadhar Card. New Aadhar cards will only be issued by DCs in rarest of rare cases to ensure a robust mechanism to check applications by illegal infiltrators,” the Chief Minister said in his post.

The move comes as the state government continues its crackdown on illegal infiltration, with Aadhaar issuance now brought under stricter control mechanisms.
