Mehdi Hasan calls for Elon Musk’s ‘prosecution’; Tesla boss fires back

Mehdi Hasan calls for Elon Musk's 'prosecution'; Tesla boss fires back

After his short time away from the American political arena, billionaire Elon Musk recently made a grand return to the base with a viral dinner with US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Ever since Trump’s second term began in 2025, Musk has had a major involvement in the political policies of the states, even becoming the de facto leader of Trump’s newly created Department of Government Efficiency. However, it seems some want the tech giant to stick to his expertise and are making their thoughts about his political participation known. Recently, during a conversation on his own news platform, Zeteo news, British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan shared how the ‘ideal’ Democratic presidential candidate for the 2028 elections should be. During the conversation he also blamed Musk for ‘engineering’ the Somali fraud case and called for his ‘prosecution’.

“I think the next Democratic President has to be ruthless. Not just President, the 2028 Democratic primaries have to showcase a group of politicians who are running for office to not just fix things, not just offer a bright future, not just running on a change platform, but are running on a platform to prosecute and punish the people who broke the law and destroyed the country,” he said. He also went on to allege that the Somali fraud crisis had been “engineered by people like Elon Musk.” “What we saw over Christmas, with the Somali fraud nonsense, was the video from this right-wing YouTuber that went viral. All these people jumping on, attacking the Somali community. That is all engineered by people like Elon Musk.” Hasan referenced his conversation with actor Jon Favreau on X, saying, “I’m only half joking when I say this, which is the next Democratic president should run on a plan to prosecute Elon Musk. They would easily go to the top of the pack.”Hasan’s remark quickly reached Musk himself, who replied to the 46-year-old journalist with a stark warning. “Game over for that pathetic weasel,” commented Musk under an X post that shared the video of the interview. Right-wing YouTuber Nick Shirley created a viral video covering nine child care facilities in Minnesota, where he visited several Somali-owned centres in an attempt to expose widespread fraud. The video prompted calls for investigation and even led to Minnesota governor Tim Walz backing out of the reelection race.
