‘My grandfather went to jail for Gandhi…’: Ro Khanna slams MAGA author praising colonization

‘My grandfather went to jail for Gandhi…’: Ro Khanna slams MAGA author calling colonization ‘greatest thing’ for backward countries

Indian-origin lawmaker Ro Khanna slammed MAGA commentator and anti-Communist author Jesse Kelly after Kelly praised colonization in a post on X. Kelly claimed colonization was “one of the greatest things” to happen in backward countries and blamed “communist education” for criticism of Western history.Responding to the post, Khanna said Kelly had it “exactly backwards.” He took the example of freedom fighter and non-violence preacher Mahatma Gandhi and said that Gandhi inspired US civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. MLK was one of the greatest political influences on American history who worked for the dignity and recognition of Black people and other marginalised groups. Khanna said that he is proud of his grandfather, who went to jail while taking part in Gandhi’s freedom movement against the Britishers in India. Khanna is an Indian-American born in Philadelphia during the US bicentenary. He linked his personal family history to back his argument that colonization is cruel and not good for any country. His maternal grandfather, Amarnath Vidyalankar, was active in India’s independence movement and spent time in jail while working alongside revolutionary figures such as Lala Lajpat Rai.Ro Khanna is the son of Indian immigrants from Punjab. His father is a chemical engineer educated at IIT and the University of Michigan, and his mother is a former schoolteacher. The Democratic lawmaker’s comments come after the US military invaded Venezuela a few days ago and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from their homes. Blue leaders criticised the move as unconstitutional and said the Trump administration was starting an unnecessary war. The attack was termed Operation Absolute Resolve, which involved large‑scale strikes and explosions across Caracas and other areas, hitting military facilities and infrastructure. Venezuelan officials condemned it as “military aggression” as loud blasts and aircraft rattled the capital and killed dozens.Khanna took efforts to stop Trump administration from attacking other countries following Venezuela. In a post on X, he said: “As a response to the illegal strikes in Venezuela, Congress must force votes and debate every day this month on War Power Resolutions to prevent Trump from invading: Cuba, Colombia, Greenland, Nigeria, Panama, Iran”
