‘Architect of the Worst Humanitarian Disasters’: X user slams Zohran Mamdani for condemning capture of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro

As if being the President of the biggest economy in the world wasn’t enough, Trump has some dreams of taking over the world. On January 3, 2026, he announced the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by the US forces in a dramatic and shocking operation. Later, on Saturday, he also announced in a press conference that the US “is going to run” Venezuela through “a team that’s working with the people of Venezuela to make sure that we have Venezuela right”.Venezuelans have been celebrating the loss of their President of 12 years, known for his corrupt policies and the economic and political unrest he caused them. But globally, the move has been condemned by many. One of them is Trump’s frenemy, New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is now facing backlash for criticising Trump’s capture of Nicolas Maduro.

The viral X post

A social media user took to X to condemn Mamdani’s X post where he wrote in length about how the capture would affect Venezuelans and those living in New York. The woman who goes by @itsthatgigi, shared how her family endured over “two decades of dictatorship, poverty, and brutal hyperinflation,” during Maduro’s regime. “Referring to Nicolás Maduro as the “President of Venezuela” misses the point entirely. He didn’t win power he hijacked it. His regime has been marked by documented electoral fraud, suppression of dissent, jailing of political rivals, and the weaponization of military force to cling to control. That’s tyranny,” she added. She claimed that the fall of Maduro wasn’t a war on Venezuela but more “about justice, about finally holding accountable the man who was in charge of the dismantling of a nation.””Standing up for New Yorkers shouldn’t mean defending the architect of one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent memory. We didn’t lose safety today we lost it when the world turned its back. Today, President Trump changed that and for that, many of us feel a long overdue sense of gratitude,” she wrote while tagging Mamdani’s post. On the day of the attack, January 3 2026, Mamdani took to X writing, “Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law.””This blatant pursuit of regime change doesn’t just affect those abroad, it directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call this city home. My focus is their safety and the safety of every New Yorker, and my administration will continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance.”The mayor faced serious backlash from numerous Venezuelans in the comments who are all celebrating the capture, rather than being sad for losing their president.
