'On path of destruction': Congress MP's warning for party; flags 'unchecked conflicts' in Tamil Nadu unit

Congress MP Jothimani

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Jothimani on Friday warned that the Tamil Nadu unit of her party was being prevented from carrying out basic election-related responsibilities and is heading towards gradual destruction due to the selfish interests of a few leaders. Taking to social media, Jothimani said the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee was moving in a direction completely opposite to the selfless, principled and fearless politics of party leader Rahul Gandhi. “We cannot betray his hardwork and unparalleled sacrifice,” she said.“No political party would ever think of obstructing its parliamentary members from submitting the list of polling booth agents to the Election Commission at election time. Yet, in the Congress party, that is precisely what is happening,” she said.“The unchecked internal party conflicts persisting in the Tamil Nadu Congress are causing profound disillusionment.”Placing her criticism in a broader political context, Jothimani warned that Tamil Nadu was facing serious challenges. “Tamil Nadu is facing an unprecedented peril from communalist, separatist, and violent forces,” she said, taking a veiled jibe at DMK , with whom the Congress is in alliance. She said the situation demanded a responsible approach from all political parties ahead of the Assembly elections, but questioned whether the Congress was meeting that responsibility. “Even after sixty years out of power, the Congress workers who have proudly carried the Congress flag in every village, their sentiments; our Tamil Nadu people who stand firm in the fight for social justice, self-respect, and state rights without bowing to communalist and separatist conspiracies—we must not abandon them,” she said. Her remarks come less than four months ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, as political parties intensify alliance negotiations. The DMK-led alliance appears largely intact, despite occasional dissenting voices from Congress leaders. The opposition camp, meanwhile, remains unsettled, with the AIADMK and BJP currently the only confirmed partners in the NDA in the state. Within the Congress, after earlier muted calls for power-sharing, the party is now planning to seek a larger share of seats, at least 40.
