A Florida man shot and killed his wife, critically wounded his teenage stepdaughter and later took his own life following an alcohol-fuelled argument over an NFL game, authorities said.Polk County Sheriff’s officials said Jason Kenney, 47, became enraged after his wife, Crystal Kenney, asked him to turn off a Monday Night Football broadcast featuring the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts. Investigators said Kenney had been drinking when the argument escalated.During the confrontation, Crystal Kenney told her 12-year-old son to call 911. The boy fled to a neighbour’s home, where he later heard gunshots. Deputies responding to the Lakeland residence found Crystal Kenney dead and her 13-year-old daughter suffering gunshot wounds to the face and shoulder. The girl was rushed to hospital in critical condition but survived and later told investigators she begged Kenney not to shoot her. After the shooting, Kenney fled the scene and contacted a relative, telling her he had “done something bad,” according to authorities. Deputies tracked him to his deceased father’s home in nearby Lake Wales, where he fatally shot himself inside a shed as police attempted to negotiate.Sheriff Grady Judd said investigators recovered a handwritten note from Crystal Kenney urging her husband to seek help for alcohol and drug abuse. Relatives also told deputies that Kenney had a history of physically abusing his wife, though no prior domestic violence calls had been reported from the home. The couple’s other children, including the 12-year-old boy and a one-year-old daughter the couple shared, were unharmed. The surviving children are now in the care of their grandparents. Sheriff’s officials described the case as devastating, calling the teenager’s survival a “Christmas miracle.”
