97.3 lakh deleted from Tamil Nadu draft rolls, 73.7 lakh in Gujarat

NEW DELHI: The draft electoral roll published in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat Friday under Phase-2 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise witnessed 97.3 lakh and 73.7 lakh deletions, respectively. Another 1.2 crore electors in each of the two states stand to receive notices for “logical discrepancies” detected in their enumeration forms. The TN electorate has shrunk from 6.4 crore on Oct 29, 2025, to 5.4 crore, with 26.9 lakh electors marked as deceased, 66.4 lakh as shifted or absent and nearly 4 lakh as enrolled at multiple places. Around 1.2 crore electors are identified as worthy of notices from the electoral registration officer for ‘logical discrepancies’ that include more than six progeny linked to the same parent in the roll from the last SIR.

Gujarat’s draft voter list shrinks to 4.3 crore from 5.1 crore

They also include electors aged more than 45 years but who have never enrolled, father name mismatch, electors less than 15 year or over 50 year age difference with parent, and less than 40 year age difference with grandparent. Gujarat’s draft electoral roll lists over 4.3 crore electors, down from nearly 5.1 crore on Oct 29. The deletions are account of around 18.1 lakh dead electors, 51.8 lakh shifted/absent voters and 3.8 lakh electors enrolled at multiple places. Enumeration forms submitted by over 1.2 crore electors show ‘logical discrepancies’, warranting ERO notices seeking an explanation and possibly documentary proof to establish eligibility for enrolment.Claims and objections may be filed by electors or party booth level agents (BLAs) in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat until Jan 18. As per the SIR guidelines, no name can be deleted from the draft roll without notice and a speaking order by ERO/AERO. Any aggrieved elector may appeal to the district magistrate, and thereafter, to the chief electoral officer of the state/UT concerned even after the final electoral roll is published.
