Twitch streamer Rakai mocked Kai Cenat’s mental health video, sparking online outrage

A popular Twitch streamer named Rakai is currently at the center of a massive controversy owing to videos that emerged with him giggling and mocking the recent emotional video by streamer and social influence Kai Cenat on mental health issues. This is with regard to a ‘Just Chatting’ stream where Rakai responded to Kai’s emotional plea with jokes about mental health issues. These videos quickly went viral on X, Reddit, and Instagram. The video was released on Kai Cenat’s 24th birthday, marking a rare departure from his usual large-scale, high-energy celebrations. However, in this instance, Kai shared with the audience the reality he had been dealing with for several months now due to being burned out and struggling with fear, self-doubt, and the pressure he experienced while pursuing more elaborate dreams.

Rakai’s response after Kai Cenat shared a mental health message

While watching Kai’s video on stream, Rakai joked, “Kai watched anime one time, now you got mental health problems,” before continuing to mock the situation by adding, “You don’t know what mental health is,” prompting laughter from his chat. The quality of the response strongly conveyed to the onlookers that the content of the message had been mocked and not taken to heart because of the gravity of the message. Rakai also implied that the communication by Kai might have been done through an AI script because he “can tell AI when I see AI.” This backlash grew as video clips began to circulate across the web, as viewers began to retaliate against Rakai, claiming he is insensitive and that his response is representative of his complete neglect of topics related to mental health. It is apparent that Kai’s video was so well received due to its genuine nature and deviation from the norm of performative content. Not only has the controversy sparked interest in protecting streaming etiquette, but it also comes amid complaints about his behavior in the stream regarding the Walmart flowers incident. As more reaction continues to flood in, the situation has brought to the fore debates over the need for accountability within the streaming culture and how the topic is handled sensitively by creators in the presence of their massive followings. Although some have defended Rakai’s remarks as having been taken out of context and that they were merely a joke, it is now clear that the situation presents the latest controversy within the larger debate surrounding the use of empathy in live streaming. Also Read: What is a “ball n gun gamer”?
