flydubai, the Dubai based airline, has taken a significant step in expanding its European network with the launch of its first direct service to Riga, the capital of Latvia. The new route, operating three times a week between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Riga Airport (RIX), marks a milestone in the growing partnership between the United Arab Emirates and Latvia. The inaugural flight received a warm welcome from airport officials, reflecting the importance of this fresh connection for both business and leisure travelers.

A new chapter in UAE-Latvia relations

The launch of the direct flight was highlighted by Noora Juma, the UAE Ambassador to Latvia, who described the event as “a new phase in the friendship between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Latvia.” She emphasized that the service will not only enhance connectivity but also unlock fresh opportunities for tourism, business, and cultural exchange. The flights are expected to support growing economic ties between the two nations and make Dubai more accessible for Latvian travelers seeking onward global connections. At the same time, the service opens the door for UAE residents to explore Latvia and the wider Baltic region, enriching cultural and tourism experiences in both directions.

flydubai’s European expansion strategy

Jeyhun Efendi, Divisional Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations and E-commerce at flydubai, explained that the Riga route aligns with the airline’s strategy to expand into underserved markets. “Latvia is an exciting and dynamic market,” Efendi said. “We are pleased to offer passengers a convenient, direct link between Dubai and Riga. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to investing in our fleet, services, and onboard products to ensure an elevated experience for our customers.”The Riga service is part of flydubai’s wider European expansion. In addition to Latvia, the airline recently started nonstop flights to Chisinau in Moldova, Iasi in Romania, and Vilnius in Lithuania. With these additions, flydubai now serves 35 destinations across 20 countries in Europe, reinforcing its presence in key markets and connecting passengers to a broader network.

Benefits for travelers and businesses

Laila Odiņa, Chairperson of the Board at RIX Riga Airport, welcomed the new service as a major enhancement to the Baltics’ largest airport. She highlighted that passengers will benefit from flydubai’s high quality service and extensive route network, while businesses and tourism sectors in both regions stand to gain from improved connectivity. The direct flights to Dubai provide Latvian travelers with access to a global hub, opening opportunities for travel beyond the UAE. Meanwhile, for residents of the UAE, Riga serves as a gateway to the Baltic states and Scandinavia, offering access to natural landscapes, cultural sites, and business opportunities in the region.
