Tourists visiting US to submit five years of social media history: Is it because of JD Vance memes?

Visitors to the United States may soon be required to disclose five years of social media history under a new proposal from the Donald Trump administration. This was a direct attack on digital privacy and showed the true authority of US border rules under the MAGA movement. But what actually led to this decision? Was it because of digital footprints against Republican leaders, or was it something completely unusual, like a meme?If finalised, the rule would apply to H-1B visa holders and all travellers, including those from visa waiver countries such as the UK, Japan, Australia, Germany and Israel. The screening was not the only thing to be worried about. Under the wider proposal, visitors may also have to provide telephone numbers used in the last five years, email addresses from the past decade, IP addresses, metadata from photos, and biometric information, including facial recognition, fingerprints, DNA and iris scans. Applicants would also be asked for details about family members, including their names, dates of birth, places of birth, telephone numbers and residences.H-1B visa holders are already subject to social media vetting since December 15. However, the new rule would extend to virtually anyone attempting to enter the US, regardless of nationality or purpose of travel.

Why JD Vance memes could be the reason for social media screening

The new rules come amid a viral reported incident in June, when a 21-year-old Norwegian tourist, Mads Mikkelsen, claimed he was deported and had to go through a strip search over a meme of US vice president JD Vance found on his phone. Mikkelsen told Nordlys (Norwegian) newspaper that he was pulled aside at Newark Liberty International Airport (New Jersey) for questioning about “smuggling and extremism” despite having valid travel documents.“They treated me like a criminal over a joke image,” he claimed at the time. “I was humiliated, and no one would tell me what I had done wrong.” US Customs and Border Protection did not respond to the incident, but the case became a hotspot of debate in Norway over digital privacy and how online content is interpreted in immigration settings. Now, with the social media history screening, visitors will have to be more cautious about their digital footprint. However, the GOP leader himself is quite fond of internet memes. This Halloween, Vance shared a photo of himself dressed as the “fat JD” meme. “Remember to say thank you!” he said in an Instagram post while pretending to answer the door for trick-or-treaters. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson called him the first “Meme Lord Vice President.” Go to Source
