Delhi riots case: Umar Khalid gets interim bail; court gives relief for attending sister's wedding

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Thursday granted interim bail to former JNU student leader Umar Khalid in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, allowing him to remain out of custody from December 16 to 29 to attend his sister’s wedding.Khalid, arrested under the unlawful activities (prevention) act (UAPA) in connection with the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 communal violence, had sought temporary relief citing family commitments. The court allowed the request after noting the purpose and limited duration of the bail, reported LiveLaw. During his release, Khalid has been directed not to use social media, or contact any witness. He has to only meet his family members, relatives and friends. Additionally, ASJ Sameer Bajpai has directed Khalid to remain at his home or at the places where the ceremonies of marriage will take place. The interim bail does not affect the broader proceedings in the larger conspiracy case, where Khalid continues to face charges related to alleged planning and coordination of protests and violence. His regular bail pleas have previously been rejected by both the trial court and the Delhi High Court, and a petition is pending before the Supreme Court.Khalid is expected to return to custody at the end of the permitted period on December 29.
