The United States has approved a major arms deal worth $686 million to sell F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, Dawn reported citing a Defense Security Cooperation Agency letter to US Congress. The deal would “support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by allowing Pakistan to retain interoperability with US and partner forces in ongoing counterterrorism efforts and in preparation for future contingency operations,” the letter said.

The package covers Link-16 systems, encryption gear, upgraded avionics, training, and full logistical support, the Pakistani news outlet reported.“It provides the warfighter key theatre functions such as surveillance, identification, air control, weapons engagement coordination, and direction for all services and allied forces,” the letter said.Additionally, it said that the deal would allow “seamless integration and interoperability between the Pakistan Air Force and the US Air Force in combat operations, exercises, and training, and refurbishment will extend the aircraft life through 2040 while addressing critical flight safety concerns.” The deal will also supply Pakistan with engineering, technical, and logistics assistance from both the US government and contractors, along with studies, surveys, and other supporting program and logistical services. This comes only weeks after a major defence boost for India, with the United States approving a potential $93 million arms sale intended to “strengthen homeland defense and deter regional threats.” The package includes the Javelin Missile System and associated equipment valued at $45.7 million, along with 216 M982A1 Excalibur tactical rounds priced at $47.1 million.”The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to India of Javelin Missile System and related equipment for an estimated cost of $45.7 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress,” a report by Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) had said.
