The United Arab Emirates has stepped forward with one of the largest early commitments to the UN’s 2026 humanitarian appeal, offering $550 million to help protect millions of people living through conflict, hunger and displacement. The pledge signals the country’s intent to keep humanitarian action at the centre of its foreign policy and to push international partners toward faster, more coordinated responses.

A major contribution to a growing global need

Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has committed $550 million to the UN’s Global Humanitarian Overview for 2026. The appeal seeks $33 billion to assist around 135 million people across 23 humanitarian operations, including programmes for refugees and migrants. Its immediate goal is to safeguard up to 87 million people requiring urgent support, for which $23 billion is needed. The UAE’s pledge strengthens its ongoing partnerships with UN agencies, particularly OCHA, and reflects a commitment to rapid, effective responses. Her Excellency Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy said the contribution reflects the leadership’s directives and the country’s belief in international solidarity to protect lives and dignity.

UN leaders praise the early support

The pledge received strong endorsements from senior humanitarian officials.Tom Fletcher, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, said the UAE’s rapid backing sends a clear signal to communities hit hardest by crises. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General, noted the funding will help restore essential health services before systems reach breaking point. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stressed that the support strengthens efforts to help children who are most vulnerable in emergencies. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi highlighted that such contributions help address severe funding gaps affecting displaced people. Cindy McCain, WFP Executive Director, called the pledge a vital lifeline as acute hunger rises and resources fall short.

Reinforcing a long standing humanitarian role

The pledge builds on the UAE’s established partnership with the UN humanitarian system and reinforces the country’s role in responding to global crises. It also strengthens collective efforts to stabilise affected regions and protect vulnerable communities, in line with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s directives that guide the UAE’s approach to humanitarian action.
