IPL 2026: PBKS vs GT – Punjab Kings started their IPL 2026 journey with a thrilling victory over Gujarat Titans but the celebrations did not last long for captain Shreyas Iyer. Even though he led his team to a 3 wicket win in Mullanpur the BCCI has officially penalized him. This makes Iyer the first captain to face disciplinary action this season.

The league confirmed that Iyer has been fined 12 Lakh INR after the match ended. This penalty is not about his behavior on the field. Instead it is because of a technical rule. The IPL stated that Punjab Kings maintained a slow over rate during the game at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.

The Rule Behind the Fine

Under the IPL rules teams must finish their 20 overs within a specific time. According to the official statement the team breached Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. Since this was the first time Punjab broke this rule in the 2026 season the fine was kept at 12 Lakh INR.

Iyer will have to be very careful in the next games. If the team repeats this mistake the fine could double to 24 Lakh INR. A third offense could even lead to a one match ban for the captain. The BCCI takes these timing rules very seriously to ensure matches do not stretch too late into the night.

A Pattern for the Captain

Shreyas Iyer has struggled with timing issues before. Last season he was fined twice for slow over rates and ended up paying a total of 36 Lakh INR. The Punjab Kings management will want to make sure their captain stays on track to avoid more expensive fines or a costly suspension that could hurt their campaign.

Despite the penalty the team is in high spirits after chasing down 163. Iyer himself contributed with 18 runs including two sixes before suffering a minor injury scare when a ball hit his wrist at the non-striker’s end. Luckily he confirmed after the match that his hand is fine.

Cooper Connolly Saves the Day

The fine was the only bad news in what was otherwise a perfect start for the team. Punjab looked like they were in trouble during the chase after a few quick wickets. However young star Cooper Connolly saved the day.

He stayed calm under pressure and smashed an unbeaten 72 runs off just 44 balls. His innings included five big sixes and he guided Punjab home with five balls left. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award and proved that Ricky Ponting’s decision to play him was a masterstroke.

Punjab Kings will play their next match against Chennai Super Kings on April 3. Fans will hope the team can keep their winning momentum while also keeping an eye on the clock.
