The by-poll was necessitated after then-Kurhani MLA, Anil Kumar Sahani of the RJD, was disqualified following his conviction in a fraud case.Gupta had previously won the Kurhani seat in the 2015 polls but came second to Sahani in the 2020 election, which was another close contest with a victory margin of just 712 votes.
